Fear Effect Resisted

A deafening bellow threatened to drive me back to the ground, but I bounced off the side of a running bison, barely avoiding the hoof that the beast reflexively kicked at me. I dismissed the notification as I continued evading the enraged bison around me. Turning toward the sound, I found the source of both the cry and the negative status effect.

Greater Plains Stone Bison Alpha (Level 76)

HP: 12,460/12,680

I read the status above the massive monster twice to ensure I’d actually read it correctly. The beast possessed an incredible amount of health, of which very little appeared missing. An angry crimson aura surrounded the Alpha, linking it to the nearby bison as the bull drew strength from the herd and strengthened them in return.

“The herd Alpha’s here, could use some help if anyone is free.” I sent over the party chat as I injected a health regeneration potion booster. A quick glance at my minimap showed a tide of red dots surrounding this side of the train, so I figured my chances of assistance were minimal.

Nargen replied first. “Tied up keeping these beasties off Eldri, though they seem to be avoiding the fire.”

“The leading edges of the herd are battering themselves against the train. Kurak and I are trying to thin them out.”

I supposed I should be thankful Dayena had decided I was worth speaking with again, but things were too serious to razz her about it.

“Understood. It’s boosting the herd, so I’ll do what I can to draw it away.”

The Alpha’s eyes flashed as it saw me in the midst of the herd, and the monstrous beast turned toward me. The huge creature, at least the size of a cement-mixer, pawed the ground and snorted. Clouds of steam rushed from nostrils the size of my fist and swirled around the Alpha when it charged forward.

I ran, pulling a new beam pistol from my Inventory as I led the Alpha away from the train.

The ground shook violently from the pounding hooves of the Alpha only strides behind me. With every step, I fought to keep moving as the ground heaved unsteadily. I felt the System tearing at me, Mana straining, as Efficient Trail struggled to ease my path. The Class Skill worked in direct opposition to the Alpha’s ability to destabilize the snow-covered earth.

I fired my beam pistol blindly over my shoulder without bothering to aim. I couldn’t afford to look back, not with the feel of the Alpha’s scalding breath on my neck. If this thing caught me, I’d be smeared to paste in an instant.

Anyway, the damn thing was the size of a minibus. If I missed at this range, I should just hang up my pistols.

Every ounce of my concentration was on my next footstep as I pushed to sprint ever faster. It wasn’t enough. I could tell that instinctively. I threw myself to the side a moment later, my feet caught by the monster smashing into them. I flipped through the air, smashing into the ground and plowing through snow.
